About the Company

Our client is a purpose-led company working within the built environment. They are passionate about helping clients shape places that are climate-conscious, biodiverse, and people-friendly.

They believe that great design and planning go hand in hand with ecological integrity – and are now seeking an Ecologist to help lead, grow, and evolve their ecology capability within their Environment and Sustainability Team. We expect that this role might appeal to Ecologists at either Senior, Associate or Director level (& the role / our clients offer will reflect this).

This is a career-defining opportunity to combine hands-on ecology with strategic influence, in a supportive and flexible environment that values purpose, autonomy, and collaboration.

About the Role

This role will sit within the new and growing Environment and Sustainability Team, working across offices and disciplines to provide ecological advice and leadership to colleagues and clients.

You’ll have the opportunity to shape how the organisation delivers ecological excellence; from advising on strategic masterplans and policy development to leading fieldwork, mentoring others, and managing specialist sub-consultants where needed.

The position will be shaped around the right person, offering flexibility to align with your strengths, interests, and preferred ways of working.

You’ll support clients in:

  • Identifying and managing ecological risks and opportunities throughout project delivery, from feasibility to construction.
  • Advising on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) – undertaking surveys, assessments, and providing design-stage advice to meet legal and policy requirements.
  • Monitoring ecological performance – using field data and site observations to ensure commitments are met during construction.
  • Delivering nature-based design solutions that integrate ecology into the built environment and leave a positive nature legacy.
  • Providing strategic ecological input to masterplans, frameworks, and policy documents.
  • Managing ecological sub-consultants to provide additional specialist expertise or capacity.
  • Building trusted relationships with clients, landowners, planners, regulators, and local communities.

About You

You’re a passionate and experienced ecologist who combines technical expertise with strategic vision and strong people skills. You’re motivated by the opportunity to influence, collaborate, and make a tangible difference through your work.

You bring:

  • Proven experience as a leader  within ecology or environmental consultancy.
  • Strong understanding of UK ecological legislation, BNG, and biodiversity policy.
  • Experience providing strategic advice across complex or multidisciplinary projects.
  • Excellent client management and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to clients and non-specialists.
  • Organised and confident project management capability across budgets, schedules, and outputs.
  • A collaborative mindset and emotional intelligence when engaging with internal teams and external stakeholders

What’s on Offer:

  • Complete flexibility – work where and how you work best.
  • Autonomy and influence – freedom to shape your role, your projects, and the ecology function.
  • Supportive culture – work within a values-driven, emotionally intelligent team that prioritises wellbeing and purpose.
  • Opportunity to grow – contribute to strategy, mentor colleagues, and help build a thriving ecology team.
  • Meaningful work – deliver projects that genuinely contribute to climate resilience, biodiversity, and better places for people.
  • Great benefits – including 2 volunteer days a year (5 if you want to go abroad to do conservation work)
