About the Company

Our client is a well-regarded, friendly, and ambitious multi-disciplinary practice specialising in ecology, arboriculture, and landscape services. Based in a charming barn conversion in rural Hertfordshire, the company provides a supportive and nurturing environment, recognised by its Investors in People Gold Standard accreditation. As a CIEEM Registered Practice, they are known for their commitment to staff development and their innovative approach to ecological consultancy. The team values collaboration, technical excellence, and a positive work environment, ensuring that each member of the team feels valued and supported.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a Principal/Senior Ecologist to join their growing team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and conducting a wide range of ecological assessments, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Protected Species Surveys (with a particular focus on bats), Protected Species Mitigation Schemes, and Biodiversity Net Gain Assessments. You will work closely with clients, providing expert advice and delivering high-quality ecological reports.

The role offers a mix of office and fieldwork, with the majority of projects located in London and Essex, although some projects may take you further afield. This position does not involve work on HS2, but offers a diverse and rewarding project portfolio.

As a key member of the team, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to the company’s strategic growth, mentoring junior staff, and playing a significant role in maintaining the company’s reputation for technical innovation and excellence.

About You

Essential Requirements:

  • Minimum of four years of experience in ecological consultancy.
  • Bat Survey Licence (Level 2).
  • Strong skills in Preliminary Ecological Appraisal and Protected Species Surveys.
  • Familiarity with Biodiversity Net Gain and its application in ecological assessments.
  • Good knowledge of British flora and fauna.
  • Understanding of wildlife legislation and the planning system.
  • Excellent report writing skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Full driving licence.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Specialist experience in assessing and reporting Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Experience in applying for and implementing European Protected Species Mitigation Licences.
  • Familiarity with BREEAM 2018 Ecology Assessments.
  • Any additional specialisms or skills that you can bring to the team.

Benefits:

  • 25 days holiday (plus bank holidays and Christmas shutdown).
  • 15 extra days off in lieu for ecological surveyors.
  • Profit-related bonus scheme.
  • Paid CIEEM membership.
  • Contributions to the NEST pension scheme.
  • Varied work supported by state-of-the-art technical software.
  • Career development opportunities and access to excellent learning resources.
  • Regular staff meetings and team-building events.
  • Great office location with good motorway access and mileage allowance.
  • Working with a diverse, knowledgeable, and friendly team who will support and guide you.

If you are a passionate ecologist with strong technical skills and a desire to contribute to a supportive and innovative team, we would love to hear from you!
